MASCORN, a beloved Malaysian brand operating since 1982, savours the fruits of its harvest – having been bestowed with the Brand Legend Awards – 40 Years category for its hard work, dedication and passion towards providing Malaysian households with quality sweet corn.

Driven by a desire to be the leading brand in providing the freshest and sweetest corn products that bring joy and nutrition to every Malaysian household has inevitably enabled MASCORN to enjoy the fruits of its harvest with it being awarded the Brand Legend Awards – 40 Years category.

“Receiving the Branding Association of Malaysia’s Brand Legend Awards is an incredible honour for us at MASCORN. It is a recognition of the hard work, dedication, and passion that our team has put into making MASCORN a beloved brand in Malaysia since 1982,” said Esther Wong, CEO of Marine Gold Marketing Sdn Bhd.

“This award not only boosts our team’s morale but also reaffirms our commitment to delivering the highest quality super sweet corn to our customers. It also helps our business by elevating our brand’s credibility and trustworthiness, attracting more customers and partners who believe in our values and the quality we offer,” she added.

Working alongside her brothers Marine Gold Marketing COO Denny Wong and CMO Wong Chun Voon, their consolidated mission is driven by their respective commitment to quality, sustainability, and community in upholding the values of integrity, consistency, and innovation which have been passed down from our founding generation.

Chun Voon agreed adding that they are grateful to their dedicated team who has been the backbone of MASCORN in “working tirelessly to uphold the quality and reputation” of its brand besides also being deeply grateful to MASCORN’s loyal customers who have being supportive through every step of our journey.

Crediting their parents who were initially in the seafood business but decided to switch lanes and sow good seeds in the corn business instead since the matriarch did not want to kill seafood for a living, but wanted to do a happy business, laying such a strong foundation built upon good values have paved the way for MASCORN to be a formidable Brand Legend recognised not only locally but also for its lucrative export business.

This acknowledgement she affirmed, serves as a testament to the quality and trust of the brand built by her family over the years. “This award will undoubtedly enhance our brand image, reaffirming to our customers and partners that MASCORN stands for quality, consistency, and tradition,” he said while being confident that the acknowledgement will open up new opportunities for them to expand their reach and continue to grow the brand both locally and internationally.

Even Lady Luck seems to favour the family during the COVID-19 pandemic when business soared double to triple the earnings as demand for their sweet corn went through the roof as households stocked up on healthy agricultural produce deemed as essential products. The business pivoting online during the pandemic also proved to be a blessing as the company enabled housewives to earn commission via the sales of “veggie boxes” for income revenue.

Riding the ups and downs, Esther believes that in order to be a Brand Legend, the priceless qualities of patience and resilience are required. “Even in bad luck, you have to continue. Sometimes, even for restaurants – a lot of things can happen. So, I thought to myself – ‘It’s going to be okay. It’s just the ambulance. What was the downside of the business? Income loss? I mean everything is very happy. And everyone is happy eating corn,” she analysed on overcoming the dreaded pandemic.

“Looking forward, we aim to expand our product line while maintaining the high standards of quality that our customers expect from us. We also plan to explore new markets and opportunities, both domestically and internationally, and to share our beloved MASCORN products with a broader audience,” shared Esther.

At the end of the day, innovation and sustainability will remain at the core of its strategies even as the brand continues to evolve to meet the changing needs of its customers and expands with the ultimate goal being to continue being a trusted household name for generations to come even as it expands its export business.

Most of all, Esther shared that one of her most treasured parts of the business is being able to spend quality time with her family as going to work means being with family – a luxury denied to many as they have to spend a large part of their time at work away from their family.

Even if they have any conflict between different work patterns between the two generations, she jokes that “the more the conflict, the more love we have.” Aptly said for a business that seems to trade well in the currency of family love.

“The most important advantage in working in this business to me is working with family. I realise life is so short. You have 50 years in this lifetime and 100 years in this slide. We are not apart from the family. So, we have the same interest and work together. I never want to give up my company because I still can see my mother at the office,” she summed up most sweetly grateful for the wisdom of foresight from her parents.
