Jimmy Low, is a progressive entrepreneur who is revolutionising the security and access control solutions industry in Malaysia and the wider region shares his  industry insights for the coming year. Through his leadership, he has elevated Magnet Security & Automation S/B (MAG) to become a household name in security access, culminating in the company’s recent achievement of securing a place in Malaysia’s Book of Records for Most Barrier Gates Sold in a year. Today, MAG is synonymous with security, visible in the entrance systems of numerous residential, commercial, and industrial buildings, including prominent landmarks like the MRT Putrajaya by Gamuda, Swinburne University of Technology in Sarawak, and Samsung SDi Energy in Negeri Sembilan.

Internationally, Jimmy has led MAG to significant accomplishments. In Indonesia, MAG supplied and installed 400 tripod turnstiles at all bus stations in Jakarta, contributing to the enhancement of security infrastructure in the region. Additionally, MAG has become a trusted partner for various entities in Bangladesh, including the Prime Minister’s Office and naval forces, further solidifying the company’s global footprint. In the Philippines, MAG products and solutions are prevalent in several Ayala Land residential and commercial buildings, and most recently, in Taman Mini Indonesia Indah in Jakarta.

As the second-generation leader of MAG, Jimmy succeeded his father, who founded the company 40 years ago. Armed with a degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering and experience gained from Silicon Valley, Jimmy introduced transformative ideas that transitioned MAG from a conventional brick-and-mortar business to a technology-based company. Under his leadership, MAG developed proprietary software and hardware through its R&D Department, including the MAgEtegra access control management software and innovative solutions such as IR Sense, Automatic Depth Measuring (ADM), and Automatic Adaptive Detection Reading (AADR). Additionally, MAG holds two patented industrial designs in Malaysia for barrier gates (BR600T) and flap barriers (FLB140), showcasing its commitment to high efficiency and affordability.

Jimmy navigated MAG through the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic gracefully, ensuring the safety and well-being of his staff without layoffs and even paying out bonuses. He continued to invest in his workforce and innovative solutions during this period, introducing the Medialess solution—a contactless, capture and control security access system merging RFID technology and facial recognition. Jimmy believes Medialess will set a trend for safer and more secure identification access without hassle, aligning with the global shift towards more convenient and secure solutions. An integrated solution can also be effective for Area Control where in the case of emergencies like a fire outbreak, the system can easily detect the identity of a trapped individual at specific unit and floor of the building to facility quick rescue mission.

Today, MAG boasts a network of over 1500 dealers across the region and Malaysia, having completed over 300 projects and exporting to 13 countries, including the Philippines, Indonesia, Vietnam, and Australia. Jimmy embodies the philosophy of ‘first work less and then earn more’, emphasising that earning more does not always mean monetary gain but encompasses various forms of personal and professional growth. This ethos encapsulates Jimmy’s concept of entrepreneurship, driving MAG towards continued success and innovation in the security and access control industry.
