The most recognisable face and undisputed queen of the fashion runway Amber Chia has been there and done it all – strutting her stuff as only sassy she can. Yet despite all her international achievements and renown, she remains humble, approachable and relevant in an ever-changing challenging fashion landscape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Strutting the fashion runway like the supermodel she is while managing her own modelling academy and balancing her role as mother to her 15-year-old son Ashton Wong seamlessly like all in a day\u2019s work, she admits that coping with it all isn\u2019t easy but she has found the solution by prioritising on what truly matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOver the years, I\u2019ve learned that balance doesn\u2019t mean doing everything perfectly but it means being present in every moment. When I\u2019m with my son, I\u2019m fully with him. When I work, I focus 100%. And most importantly, I remind myself to take care of my own well-being too,\u201d she shared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the high stakes world of the glamorous fashion runway, balancing her time is all about discipline maintaining intention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI plan my schedule carefully, but I also stay flexible because motherhood is unpredictable. As a mother, my role is not just to provide but to guide, support, and be emotionally present. I want my son to grow up confident, kind, and independent. More than anything, I want him to know that no matter what, I\u2019m always here for him.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To her, the most difficult part of her motherhood journey was raising him as a single mother, especially when he was young. Despite the moments of doubt, exhaustion, and pressure she “I kept going because of love”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And, as he grew older, the challenge changed from physical care to emotional guidance. Teenage years, she said with the wisdom of a mother – requires more patience, communication and trust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By spending quality time together doing simple things like talking, traveling, working together, and supporting each other\u2019s interests – she believes bonding doesn\u2019t need to be complicated and just needs to be genuine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the most emotional and proud moments for her was doing what she does best – strutting the fashion runways with her son.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt was honestly one of the most emotional and proud moments for me. Seeing him walk beside me and sharing the same stage \u2014 it was very special,\u201d she enthused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Never forcing him to do anything, her parenting style lies in allowing him to explore and enjoy the experience as she feels it is more about building his confidence and exposure – rather than pushing him into the industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He only advice to her son is to \u201cBe a good person first, success comes later.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI encourage him to explore, learn, and discover what he truly loves. At this stage, I don\u2019t pressure him into any specific career. I believe every child has their own journey. My role is to guide, not decide,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And on being the son to such a famous mother, she admitted that initially he was a bit shy about it but over time, he has learned to embrace it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTo him, I\u2019m just \u2018mom.\u2019 At home, there\u2019s no supermodel \u2014 just a mother who nags, cares, and loves him. I think that keeps things grounded and real,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This supermodel who has graced coveted fashion runways and yet remains one of the most level-headed persons dispenses a nugget of wisdom to other mothers in that she believes the most important thing is to build their children\u2019s character, not just their achievements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTeach them discipline, kindness, resilience, and confidence. Let them experience failure, because that\u2019s how they grow. And, most importantly be their safe place. When children feel secure and loved, they will naturally find their own path.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Describing her relationship with her son as very close – like friends, but with respect – they \u201ctalk about everything, laugh a lot, and support each other\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While there are moments of disagreement – that\u2019s all a part of growing together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sharing that her single days and motherhood are two very different chapters of her life, she shared that her single days were about freedom, exploration, and building her career. And, though she enjoyed that phase leading her into who she is today – motherhood however, gives a deeper kind of happiness although it comes with responsibility, sacrifice, and sometimes challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf you ask me to choose, I would still choose motherhood because it completes my life in a way nothing else can as the love, purpose, and fulfillment it brings are incomparable,\u201d she opined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the end of the day, to her, Ashton\u2019s not just her son but he is her biggest blessing and her motivation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The adage that \u201cA woman\u2019s place is in the kitchen\u201d sits well with Puan Sri Nisa Bakri. In fact, for her, growing up in a kitchen bursting with aromas, stories, and lessons from her late mother who would whip up culinary feasts for family and friends were an integral part-and-parcel of her growing up years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMy late abah <\/em>would bring friends over all the time and I remember how I had to help mama <\/em>grind the spices and herbs using the batu giling<\/em> while she will be blabbering endlessly to me on the importance of knowing the different types of herbs, spices and even the proper ways to cut onions as the way you chop, slice or cut the onion will bring different taste and flavour to each dish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen I reminisce back, mama <\/em>was teaching and guiding me through those chores which turned into precious shared moments while teaching me patience, care, and curiosity. Those early kitchen experiences sparked my love for food and storytelling through meals. Tepuk Tepung<\/em> is, in many ways, a continuation of that heritage – (representing) a modern tribute to the flavours and warmth I learned from my late mama<\/em>,\u201d she reminisced giving an insight into her newly opened cafe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Balancing her love for cooking, the start of her entrepreneurial dream in setting up Tepuk Tepung<\/em>, and being a mother to her requires discipline. The best part is witnessing tiny moments of growth and connection every day while watching her children develop their own interests besides seeing them learn values like kindness and resilience while sharing in the magic of small everyday rituals around food and family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat they would wait for me to come home and cook for them – The wait.. that brings me excitement with passion to drive home and cook with my \u2018air tangan\u2019 for them. It is the greatest pleasure I get and my last smile before I sleep is the picture of my family chatting, laughing, and eating with love echoing everwhere,” she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As in real life, there are downsides like in managing moments when priorities collide and guilt creeps in. Balancing high-demand responsibilities with mindful presence for her family she admitted, is challenging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI focus on imperfect progress, open communication and self-compassion to navigate those times. I juggle, I hustle (as well as) delegate, micro-manage the tasks and duties to my team and even then, miscommunication constantly happens. This is the hardest parts which are miscommunication and being misunderstood,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Navigating Their Northern Stars<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Knowing that life is wrought with challenges, the advice to her daughter Norjunita Abdul Rashid, 34, is to \u201cbe curious with caution, be fearless in pursuing what you love while staying true to your values. Build a strong work ethic, seek mentors and don\u2019t shy away from hard work. Success (after all) isn\u2019t just about outcomes; it\u2019s about integrity, kindness and the joy you find in the journey. And above all, nourish your body and spirit (while) food, family and passions are your northern stars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMy daughters are curious and creatively inclined so I encourage them to explore cooking for their own family, telling them that: It all starts from the kitchen to the front door, and your luck starts when you prepare your kitchen with meals that is cooked by you. I believe in choosing a path that fits who they are, not just a family legacy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her original background in finance, economics and business management found her working in investment stocks and broking at Ambank in her early career back then. She then decided to quit and became an entrepreneur diving into fashion handbags and high-end leather cleaning products – selling them internationally in 12 different countries and 62 stores worldwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAfter selling the business, I published a cookbook entitled \u2018I Am Not A Chef\u2019 that changed my life journey from an entrepreneur, to a home cook into an internationally acclaimed Chef,\u201d she recalled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Right now, she affirmed that she is exactly where she should be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI wouldn\u2019t want any other career than what has been destined for me. I love what I do. I am at peace with what I do. I have many more dreams and goals to reach and I am not even halfway there!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Explaining that the inspiration for her newly launched Tepuk Tepung<\/em> came from a combination of nostalgia and practicality: a longing for the familiar warmth of home-cooked meals and the need for quick, delicious solutions for busy families – Tepuk Tepung<\/em> to her represents a bridge between heritage and innovation\u2014honoring tradition while making it accessible and relevant today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her secret to maintaining the balance of various roles as mother, entrepreneur and Celebrity Chef to her commands a high level of prioritisation, self-time management and routines which are key to success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI build a flexible schedule that protects family time and delegate where possible. I also ensure batch-process tasks (meal preparation, content creation as well as administration activities). I also lean on a trusted team, set clear boundaries, and practice gratitude to stay grounded. My prayers and spiritual time in the earliest morning is a necessity. Small, consistent steps add up, and I remind myself that balance isn\u2019t perfection, it\u2019s progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hailing from Sunlight Taxi Group of Companies, Dato’ Choi Wei Yee was running the family business founded by her father – her professed idol, in 1996. The remarkable thing about Sunlight Taxi founded by her father – a good man, she vouched, was this little know fact that the taxi empire was built from his own efforts as a humble taxi driver from the kampung <\/em>to step-by-step building Malaysia\u2019s trusted taxi group providing affordable taxi services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Being the eldest in her family, her doting father gave her full rein of the business whereby she could \u201cdo whatever she pleased for the business\u201d without him ever stopping her, she recalled with delight. Running the business since my age of 26 in year 2002 she said, took its toll whereby being a workaholic, she neglected her health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Suffering from hormonal disorder, fatigue, lack of sleep quality and very serious gastric problem, set her on a journey towards reclaiming her health back. And, she knew she had to get her health back on track due to her delivering her son.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMotherhood changes you. It makes you more patient,\u201d she said she dotes on her son Thorrez, now 13 and realised that she neeeds a proper bill of health to be able to take either short or long holiday trips with him which are \u201cvery lovely times\u201d for her. In fact, she says her son has been on so many overseas trips with her that he doesn\u2019t want to travel anymore, she said with an amused laugh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Seeking a positive remedy, she sought stem cell treatments, looking for a solution to regain her health. Meeting doctors and doing her due diligence in research just as how she had run her father\u2019s taxi business with military precision, her newfound elixir of regained health had all her friends enquiring about the secret to this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The many happy outcome results stemming from a prolific list of clientele regaining their health back made sense for her to venture into this business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hence, she decided in 2019 that she wanted to venture and flourish in the Wellness Tourism Industry as TDOX Clinic can provide these quality services at a much more competitive rate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Technology of the future<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Considering herself blessed throughout her life – being a favoured daughter and a role model to her sisters, and receiving full support from her husband – the key highlight of her life is her son Thorrez whose name she said came as a sudden inspiration to her inspired by a famous footballer. Weekends are strictly family time – and a way to maintain a healthy worklife balance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI Value family time with my siblings and relatives. During weekdays, I work long hours but save my Sundays visiting my parents for breakfast. Saturdays evening are for family time with my sisters and brothers. I do sports such as pickleball and yoga once per week with a personal trainer,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her son has also travelled almost half the world with her and on home ground, Dato Choi who was once very athletic, finds much pleasure bicycling with him during weekends while indulging in a bit of sports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Putting out fires is all in a day\u2019s work for the recently elected President of the Branding Association of Malaysia (BAM) Michelle Hah who has made it her mission to take Malaysian brands to the world stage as part of her agenda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The same too can be said for her ability to wear many hats, including the safety helmet, while embracing various roles. At 69, and just one year shy of turning 70, she admits to relishing her life at this season – being in \u201ca comfortable spot\u201d while embracing all her roles wholeheartedly – as mother, daughter, wife and grandmother – plus sister and friend. Having achieved all that she has, she considers the time is ripe to empower others, especially women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNow, I\u2019m able to empower women so that in itself is powerful,\u201d she said. Having just been elected by BOMBA and inaugurated to Honorary Rank of Senior Fire Superintendent One, she is reportedly the only first woman to have received this award.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI used to get a lot of awards – some glamorous awards too – but this is the first time from BOMBA receiving the Honorary Rank of Senior Fire Fighter said the wife to her partner-in-crime Jeffrey while being a mother to Calvin Soo, 45; Suet Li Soo, 42; and Brian Loo; the youngest trooper at 32 who has made her a grandma with his one\u2014year-old son Joon Ming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not so much the work-life balance but the ability to enjoy the work and life which matter to me, so it\u2019s an integration but not a seperation. But of course, we have to prioritise our responsibilities while discipline is essential so if I\u2019m with family, we must have quality time,\u201d she related.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In fact, in the middle of May, we went makan-makan as a family abroad. Finding time to get together is success in itself in terms of a fine balance between both work and family. By 630am, I\u2019m already up and in the morning, I plan my day with mornings spent doing important things to keep it fresh and strategising over meetings or inteviews in the afternoon in team non-governmental organisation (NGO) engangments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFMM also has a lot of activities and with me being the Vice President. I also believe in engaging with activities related to the government. As the President of the Branding Association of Malaysia (BAM), my mission this year is more engagement with the government to bring our own Malaysian brands to go global and recognise our Malaysian brands overseas with government backing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWith the ongoing war situation, everything we import is expensive but if we can recognise Malaysian-made products, we can remain cost-effective. And branding itself can give people assurance of quality to buy branded goods with the brand promise of consistency of quality,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And while many people think that branding is just a logo or name, because we have built that brand promise, people believe in the quality so we build trust and quality along with the branding. And, with Fire Fightere – we have to do things right the first time and we cannot make mistakes because precious life is at stake if the equipments don\u2019t function properly so we need to have quality,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the end of the day – it\u2019s never easy and can never be a perfect balance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBu,t it\u2019s all about prioirties, as at different stages of life we have different roles to play. So we play different stages of life – at all stages of life we have to be a daughter – so from there we carry on, we became a mom and have children. We have to be responsible at home and at work we have to be play a responsible role to play the parts – at different stages we play different roles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To Be Grateful Is Everything<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPeople today are too materialistic and they don\u2019t really focus on gratitude. And, not everything can be bought with money. But, if your family is united – that is so much better, and in that respect, I do find satisfaction,\u201d she quipped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And while she may be in a male-dominated, she believes she can scale the greatest heights by delivering consistent results because Fire Fighter is in the business of saving lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dispensing advice to other mothers – she tells them to not try to do everything themselves because it\u2019s not easy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTry to build a support system by empowering other women. And be very clear about your priorities. Integrity is important so do what you say and say what you do. And, in saying that when women support each other – we rise together,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For now, with Fire Fighter having celebrated over 50 years of equipping Malaysin housesholds with fire extinguishers, the next aim is to fireproof each household in Malaysia with a fire extinguisher. Ria Kim, 30, who originally hails from Korea, has carved her own niche as Founder & Director of H7 Pilates & Academy Malaysia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI have been in the Pilates industry for the past 6 years, and what began as a passion for movement has grown into a career dedicated to helping people improve their health through intelligent, purposeful movement,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prior to settling in Malaysia, she spent six years living in Canada. This experience not only shaped her independence but has also broadened her perspective and greatly influenced the way she approaches both life and business today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Deciding to make a move to Malaysia in 2020 was initially a personal life decision which soon evolved into a defining chapter of her professional journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAs I built my career in Pilates here, I recognised a strong demand for more specialised movement education and a deeper, more corrective approach to Pilates instruction. That inspired me to establish H7 Pilates & Academy Malaysia,
a space designed not only for premium Pilates training, but also for education and professional development within the industry,\u201d she said of her pilates studio which will be opening by June this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What sets her studio apart is the philosophy that \u201cmovement should never be approached with a one-size-fits-all mindset\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAt H7, every client begins with assessment. We prioritise postural analysis and corrective programming before prescribing exercise, ensuring each individual receives guidance tailored to their body\u2019s needs,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOur 3,700-square-foot studio has been thoughtfully designed as both a premium Pilates facility and an education academy, a space where clients can transform their bodies and instructors can elevate their expertise,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A mother to a baby girl, she shared that no two days are ever the same for her, which she considers one of the most exciting aspects of entrepreneurship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMy mornings usually begin with family time before transitioning into teaching, meetings, studio management, and strategic planning for the business. Much of my day is also dedicated to curriculum development, instructor mentoring, and overseeing the finer details of building the H7 brand in Malaysia,\u201d she enthused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the role she relishes most of all is at the end of the day, she returns to her most important role – that of being a mother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not putting the whole weight of the pressure of work-life balance unto herself in terms of achieving total perfection, she has a unique approach to life, similar to her private analysis of each client\u2019s postural analysis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTo be honest, I don\u2019t believe work-life balance is about perfection. For me, balance is about presence, being fully engaged in whichever role I am in at that moment. When I am working, I give my business my full attention. And, when I am with my daughter, I make a conscious effort to be completely present with her,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not dismissing challenges by viewing life from rose-tinted glasses, she admits that while is not always easy, she has learned that \u201cbalance is less about dividing time equally, and more about being intentional with the time you have\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sharing that the most challenging part of her role is the responsibility that comes with leadership, she likens the running of a business to a sense of consistent leadership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cRunning a business means carrying the weight of every decision, not only for yourself, but for your team, your students, and your clients. People often see the final result, but behind every successful business is constant problem-solving, pressure, and responsibility,\u201d she elaborated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dispensing friendly advice to other mothers, she encourages them to pursue their own dreams as to her, \u201cMotherhood does not mean the end of your ambitions\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt is possible to be deeply devoted to your family while still pursuing your personal goals and dreams. Balance may not look perfect every day, and there will be challenges, but you should never feel that becoming a mother means losing yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe most beautiful part of motherhood is watching your child grow into their own person. Seeing the world through my daughter\u2019s eyes has brought me a new perspective and a deeper appreciation for life,\u201d she shared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And to her the struggle is real as \u201cthe hardest part is managing the emotional tension between wanting to be present for every moment and still pursuing your own ambitions\u201d while \u201cThere is always a level of guilt that comes with being a working mother, but I remind myself that by chasing my dreams, I am also showing my daughter what is possible.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Drawing upon the greatest lesson her mother taught her which is kindness, she also recalls the encouragement she received to pursue the life she wants while gently guiding her whenever she lost direction. These are the same lessons she passes on to her daughter, just as how similarly, she gave her the freedom to \u201cexplore the world, while always remaining a source of wisdom, honesty, and support\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBecause of her openness and trust, I was able to live abroad from a young age, spending years in Canada and later building a life in Malaysia,\u201d she recalled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And even now, despite the distance, they speak every day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHer unwavering support has given me the confidence to stand on my own while knowing I always have a home in her heart,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finding Malaysia a safe haven for nurturing her dreams, she also wants to give back to this once-foreign land which she now calls home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
